Established in 1851 as The Buffalo Female Academy by a group of prominent Buffalo men, who saw a need for local educational opportunity for women. Johnson Cottage, the former home of Buffalo's first mayor, was chosen as the residence of the school's first head, Charles E. West. Classes were also held there until a school building, Goodell Hall, was constructed in 1852. In 1889 the school's name was changed to The Buffalo Seminary.
